Joined in religious community, the Sisters of the Congregation of the Humility of Mary (CHM) can accomplish what one alone cannot do in creating an environment of justice, love and peace. Since 1854 CHMs have moved from one continent to another, lived in diverse cultures and worked with people of all age groups. From the beginning, the community has been characterized by the capacity to change with the times and to adapt to new circumstances and challenges, while holding to a core of faith.
Today CHM sisters, associates and volunteers remain joyfully committed to their original mission: going wherever the Spirit leads and doing what the needs of the times require. CHMs continue to respond to these needs through ministry to single parents and senior citizens, the homebound, immigrants and persons experiencing homelessness, poverty and physical and mental illness. Other works include parish and prayer ministries, teaching, social justice and care of the earth itself. CHMs and their associates are active in 20 states and three countries.
In the Davenport area the sisters are active in a variety of ministries including Humility of Mary Housing, Inc., Humility of Mary Shelter, Café on Vine, Central Community Circle Food Pantry and Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat.
Four forms of association with the Sisters of the Humility of Mary have been initiated as a response to the growth of lay ministry in the church and the spiritual needs of our global culture. The Associate Program, Seeds of Hope volunteer program, Visitation Program and the New Hope Community enable women and men of all faiths to participate in the spirit and service of the congregation without becoming vowed members.
